Speedball
Platform: Commodore 64
Gametype: Undefined
_________________________

The original future sport game, Speedball is played out on a small court with five players on each team, making it more frantic than the more famous sequel. The ball must be thrown into the goal at your opponent's end. Any amount of physical contact can be made, and there are no illegal ways to get the ball or the goal.

Before each match you can bribe the referee into awarding you a head-start or strengthening the abilities of your players. You compete in a simple knockout cup tournament, or in individual 2-player games.

Trivia

The C64 version of the game is one of the 30 games on the Commodore 64 Direct TV retro game joystick released in 2004.

Unofficially inspired by the 1975 movie 'Rollerball'.

Speedball won The Golden Joysticks 1989 Game of the Year.

Description from the packaging:

Speedball... The sport of the future! Faster than hockey, meaner than wrestling. Speedball is the action sport of the 21st century. Wearing spiked armor bodywear, helmet and gloves, you'll go face-to-face with some of the ugliest, meanest goons in the world!

Speedball is a total free-for-all- as you dodge neck-braking tackles and bone-crushing body slams to pass a solid steel ball towards your opponents goal. Whip the ball past an unsuspecting goalie or ricochet it off the metal walls to score points. With tenacious defense and timely tackling you'll steal the ball and send your opponent reeling to defeat! Hammer your foe enough times and he'll cry for mercy.
Build a team that's unbeatable! Choose from one of three franchises and develop your team from the ground up. Collect power-up tokens during gameplay. Use them to improve your team's stamina, power, and skill levels, or buy off the competition- a few coins sent in the right direction transforms tough guys into sissies. You can even bribe the officials- this is no-holds barred competition!

Compete in league play. Speedball features a complete league system, with 11 teams vying for championship honors. You select the duration of the playing season and the computer creates the schedule. Each game pits you against teams with unique skills, strengths and weaknesses. After each game, the computer analyzes the game results and keeps statistics for each team.
